Double Takes: This is… Miroslav Sasek

Czech author and illustrator Miroslav Sasek published a delightful 18 book series called

This Is... between 1959-74 (republished between 2004-08). While his books were intended for children, their appeal is ageless. The series features a plethora of destinations from Paris to Hong Kong. I would absolutely love to call this entire collection my own. You can read more about Miroslav Sasek and see examples of his work at This is M. Sasek.

Double Takes: Vintage Panoramic Maps of Italy

I’m enchanted by these panoramic maps of Italy from 1704. I’ve only visited Italy in brief, Venice for a day in the summer of 2008, but it’s a country I’d like to devote a lot more time to exploring. I’d love to see the Italy depicted in these maps from the Nouveau Theatre D’Italie by Pieter Mortier (1661-1711), a four volume atlas published in Amsterdam.
