Since centuries ago, the Giant Swing has played an essential part in annual Hindu origin ceremonies that symbolically reenact elements from their stories. The unflappable Giant Swing represented Shiva himself – standing on top of a mountain with his jaws wide open and using his teeth to catch coins that hung from a tall pole!

Today’s giant swing can be found just outside Wat Suthat in Bangkok. First established in 1784 and renovated multiple times since, its current iteration dates from 2007. Built from massive teak tree trunks imported from Phrae province due to ravages caused by tropical climate, previous versions had succumbed to weather damage over time.
